IPMA® certification is evolving and expanding

The International Project Management Association (IPMA) has been developing certification for project management professionals for over 20 years. It all started in the 1990s with the certification of project managers. IPMA certification has expanded over the years and there are currently 24 different IPMA certifications available. From these, every project management professional can find a certificate that suits them.

IPMA Certificate Family

IPMA certifications are divided into four target groups:

  • Project, portfolio and programme management of which there are 8 types
  • Agile leadership certificates, of which there are 4 types
  • Certificates for consultants, coaches and trainers, of which there are 6 types
  • Certificates for courses and degree programmes, of which there are 6 types

Project, Portfolio & Programme management, and Agile Leader certificates

There are certificates available in project management and agile development for four different roles and at four different levels. Assessment processes and requirements are defined on a level-by-level basis. The applicant's experience determines which domain and level certificate person can apply for.

Required experience on different levels

In Project Management certification, competency assessment is based on the IPMA Individual Competence Baseline (ICB). Download ICB shop.ipma.world.

The Agile Leader - certification competency assessment is based on the IPMA Reference Guide ICB4 in an Agile World. Download that guide from shop.ipma.world.

Consultants, coaches and trainers’ certificates

IPMA has issued a new certificate, the IPMA CCT, to consultants, coaches and trainers.

There are three different levels of IPMA CCT certification: C, B and A. The level is determined by the applicant's experience and competence in consulting, coaching or training. Take a closer look at the options and requirements listed below and find your own level certificate!

The following CCT certificates are available:

In addition, at all CCT levels, the applicant must hold an IPMA Level A, B, C, or D certificate, or at least an approved IPMA Level D exam.

IPMA CCT certification follows the IPMA ICB4 qualification specification. ICB4 is complemented by the IPMA Reference Guide for Consultants, Coaches and Trainers (IPMA ICB4 CCT), which provides more detail on project consulting, coaching and training and the qualifications required. Download the guide from shop.ipma.world.

Certification of courses and training programmes

IPMA has developed a service that evaluates various courses and training programmes in the field of project management.

The IPMA REG Certificate is available for all courses or degree programs in the Project Management that address qualifications in accordance with the IPMA Competence Baseline standard. The certificate can be applied for by various official educational institutes (eg. Universities or Universities of Applied Sciences) as well as by private training providers.

There are six different types of IPMA REG certificates:

In addition, the REG certificates that actually prepare for IPMA certification are:

IPMA REG Exam Preparation Course (less than 60 contact hours) and IPMA REG Exam Preparation Programme (more than 60 contact hours).

Criteria for assessing the certificate

In the IPMA REG certification process, assessment is based on the application and the marketing and course material of the course / degree programme. The aim is to assess the possibility for the participant to raise the IPMA ICB qualifications in accordance with the marketing message and the content. The starting point for the assessment is that the course / syllabus covers one or more ICB competencies for at least two hours of attendance / competency.
